HOW TO START GINGER FARMING IN NIGERIA

INTRODUCTION
Ginger is a rhizome plant that is used by many companies such as pharmaceutical industries, breweries and soap producers.
In this my blog post am going to guide you on the step by step guide on how to start ginger farming and make profit.

  • GINGER PRODUCTION IN AFRICA
    Nigeria is the highest producers of ginger in africa and forth in the world.because of this benefit and high demand Nigerians are now moving to different agricultural sector. And the example of this sectors is ginger farming.


SITE PREPARATION

Before planing to go into ginger farming the first and foremost thing you have to think of is
LOCATION :it should be located in an area where there is water but not river so that it wouldn’t be drown by erosion. The best place to cultivate ginger in nigeria is kaduna moist and the condition of the weather.

LAND:the land should be fertile and well moist, it could be rented or buy but the best soil that will be recommended is loamy soil.
HEELS:Ridges are best recommended for ginger cultivation

TIME:The best time to cultivate is 2 months before raining season.

CULTIVATION RATE
Ginger should be cultivated in a random, it should be 5,000kg per two hecters of land, that is 2,500kg per hecter.
PLANTING


Ginger is planted in such a way that its bud is face upward and at instance should be spaced about 20-30cm away from each other and 7-8cm deep.
NOTE:It should not be treated with any chemical before planting to avoid been affected, Instead organic manure is recommended, such as chicken waist.

WEEDING
Weed can be define as any grass growing where dey are not planted. So weed should be removed from the ginger 3 to 4 times before harvesting, it can be controlled by spraying of chemical herbicide or the use of manual labour such as hand, cutlass and mini holes.

MULCHING
Mulching should also be done after weeding in other to control and retain the fertility of the soil.

PEST AND PEST CONTROL
Pest in ginger is an thing that attack crops, it could be inform of animal or insect
Pest in ginger is best controlled with chemical or organic. The chemical method is by spraying of anti-pest chemical such as RELIQUAT.You can also gather goat waist and deep them inside water for 3 days then extract the water and spray it at the surface of the leaves.

IRRIGATION

Irrigation simply means the supply of water to land during dry season.
In dry season the ginger needs to be supply with water at least once in a week, while in raining season there is no need except total drought around that August break in the south easthern Nigeria.
HARVESTING
Ginger get matured once in a year, that is 7 to 8 months of planting, some people do harvest when they are one year old depending on their target. They are harvested with machine or manual labour by the use of holes.
PROCESSING
Ginger is processed and sold as fresh or dry, the ginger that is dried last longer and are been stored.
PROFITABILITY
Let’s assume you spend 500k in everything u did from the start to finish your profit should be around 600 to 700k. You see how ginger farming is highly profitable.
USES OF GINGER
1.They are use for the treatment of cough in poultry by grounding it together in their feed.
2.It is use as herbal drug for the treatment of infection.
3.It is used in the breweries for manufacturing drinks.
4.It is also used in the making of soap.
